Alex multi-purpose boat

Multi-task vessel: working and research boat

The ALEX is a non-scale model of a modern 14 m multi-task boat.

The model is based on a modern planing hull, and is therefore very fast and agile. The hard-chine hull is of plastic construction. All the ABS parts are supplied laser-cut, and can be slotted together and glued immediately.

The hull is assembled on a Depron jig. The power system consists of two electric motors which can either be controlled individually (2 x Multi 25 speed controller) or in common by a single Multi 40 controller. Two rudder systems are used for directional control.

The A-mast towards the stern can also be servo-operated. The towing mechanism is rugged enough to tow other boats.

The wheelhouse is assembled completely from mahogany components. The etched instrument panel components make it possible to illuminate the large number of instruments. All the model's lamps can be lit using 3 mm LEDs.

The searchlight is assembled from ready-made etched parts, and is fully articulated. The reflector and LED are carefully matched, and produce an exceptionally powerful, accurately focussed beam of light.

The model can be further expanded at the builder's discretion, since plenty of space is available in the hull for additional working systems such as bow thruster, lighting, sound effects or winches.

The model kit contains:

All laser-cut ABS parts required to build the model, Depron jig, fittings and propeller shafts, motor mounts and rudders.

The extensive set of etched nickel-silver components contains more than a hundred parts, including railing stanchions, searchlight, working door hinges, panel instruments, ventilator panels and much more.

Pilot boat

Product no.: 304600

Pilot boat

The Pilot is based freely on a modern 20 m pilot boat. Boats of this general type are widely encountered along the Baltic and North Sea coasts. These vessels are very agile and fast, typically capable of 25 - 30 kn. Their task is to provide reliable, all-weather transport for pilots to the large ocean-going ships. The space aft of the command stand can accommodate several pilots, so that a single excursion can take all of them out to their “workplaces”. Our model very effectively incorporates the typical characteristics and handling of these boats. The model is based on a modern planing hull, and is very fast and manoeuvrable. It takes the form of a hard-chine hull of plastic construction. All the ABS parts are laser-cut, and can be glued in place immediately after slotting them together.hull is assembled on a Depron building jig. Two electric motors provide the power. The motors can either be controlled individually (2 x Multi 25 speed controllers) or jointly using one Multi 40 speed controller. The steering system consists of two rudders. A complete fittings set is provided for the wheelhouse. The etched parts for the instrument panel make it possible to illuminate many of the instruments. All the model’s lamps can be fitted with 3 mm LEDs. The two bow searchlights are very powerful, and in conjunction with the black rubbing strake give the model a distinctive appearance. The spotlight is assembled from etched components and is fully articulated. The reflector and the LEDs are carefully matched to each other, and produce a tremendously powerful, focussed beam. Additional working systems can be added to the model at the builder’s discretion. There is ample space in the hull for auxiliary systems such as bow thruster, lighting system or sound generator.

The model kit contains: All the laser-cut ABS parts required to build the model, Depron jig, fittings, rubbing strake, propeller shafts, rudders, plus the reflectors and LEDs for the searchlights. The kit also includes an etched German silver parts set containing more than one hundred components. These include railing stanchions, searchlights, working door hinges, control panel instruments and much more.

Voith Water Trecker BIENE VSP65BM

Voith Water Trecker BIENE VSP65BM

The BIENE (Bee) was the first Voith tractor to be built and tested. For the first time, the drive was installed from the rear to the front.

1) Extensive model tests have shown that the negative pressure field of the propeller attenuates the height of the bow wave, so that the vehicle does not raise any shore-fixing waves even when travelling in a canal. In detail, the model test showed that at 4 knots the suction figure is zero, i.e. the negative pressure field pulling forward cancels out the damaging frictional suction. From 4 knots upwards, there is even an increase in thrust, i.e. the negative pressure forces reduce the pressure increase at the bow to such an extent that not only is the frictional suction cancelled out, but a positive thrust gain even remains. Compared to the stern arrangement, where normally 15-20% thrust reduction due to suction occurs, the bow drive even achieves a gain of at least 20% during normal towing. The end plate (protective plate under the VSP) also provides a further thrust gain of 6%, which compensates for the drag of the props during free flight.
After these model tests, it was decided to build the first large-scale version. BIENE

It had a propulsion power of 115hp, the wing diameter was 1.4m, the wing length was 65cm.

The test runs carried out in August 1952 showed the following result:
Time for 180° turn                10 sec.
Free speed                           14 km/h
Hawser pull on the pile         1720 kg
Braking time from full speed
Forward or reverse speed     3.5 sec.
Reverse speed                      13.8km/h

With the same towing power, the draught and the size of the tug could be reduced. The manoeuvrability was extremely increased with this concept.
In addition to the chosen shape, the bow drive is also important for the good seaworthiness. It makes it possible to always keep the vehicle safely in front of the sea without ever running the risk of being pushed sideways.
This made it an ideal new type of tug for harbours.
The Biene was built in 1952 in Oberwinter near Bonn and underwent extensive tests, both on the Rhine, the adjacent canals but also in the ports of Bremen and Hamburg.

This was the starting signal for many Voith water tractors until today.

This was followed in 1953 by the Hornisse, type Lütje Horn (Deutsches Marinemuseumand in 1954 by the well-known tugboat Stier, which is now in the Bremerhaven Maritime Museum.

 VSP Tug ASHDOD 1:50

The new and innovative VectRA 3000 Class Tug is a high performance VSP tractor tug developed by Robert Allan Ltd in close co-operation with Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar and Voith Turbo Propulsion. The tug is designed for maximum efficiency in towing, harbour handling and escorting large vessels. Performance was verified at the beginning of the design cycle with extensive modelling tests. The unique propulsion arrangement consists of high-speed diesel engines connected to the VSPs via reduction gears with integrated clutches. With a bollard pull of 73.5 tonnes, the VectRA 3000 can generate a steering force of more than 100 tonnes. In addition, the design has fire-fighting and oil recovery functions.

The first vessel in the series, the M/T Ares, later ARIE A, which was built in 2016 for Italian tug owner Tripmare S.p.A., was successfully commissioned at Sanmar's new Altinova shipyard in February 2016.
The second VSP tug ASHDOD was completed in 2018 and is currently in operation in ASHDOD.

The third VSP tug EITAN was built in 2021 and is also currently in service in ASHDOD.
